Choosing the Right Tackle Box

Tackle boxes are essential for keeping all of your small bits of fishing gear together and organized. Choosing the right tackle box is easy if you follow a few simple guidelines. First of all, get one big enough for your gear, but also plan for the future. Select a style that you find easy to work with. If you fish from your boat, consider getting a tackle box that attaches to the side of the boat.

For your fishing to be enjoyable and successful, you will need a full set of fishing tackle. However, you can’t just throw everything into a sack and expect to find it when you need it. A fishing tackle box is essential to keep everything organized and easy to find.

Make sure you get a tackle box with plenty of room, especially if you are just starting out. You might not have a lot of tackle right now, but your collection will grow quickly as you encounter different fishing situations. Unless you enjoy buying a new tackle box every few months, go ahead and try to anticipate your needs. It may seem a little too roomy at first, but tackle always expands to fit the space of the box.

A couple of different styles are available. The most common opens from the top. Usually the lid opens from the middle to reveal space beneath. There may be attached trays that deploy automatically as the lid is opened. Or there may be a lift-out tray under the lid. The trays are divided into different compartments to hold sinkers, hooks, bobbers, lures and more. There is usually a larger compartment for your tools below. If you are moving around a lot, you might want to look for styles that include plastic lids over each compartment in the tray so things don’t fall out and get mixed together.

You may also run across a chest-of-drawers style tackle box. There are a couple of shallow drawers at the top with a deeper drawer at the bottom. Again, these will usually be divided into compartments. Some boxes may offer customizable compartment arrangements. This will help you match the tackle box to your unique arrangement of gear.

You can also find tackle boxes that will attach to the side of the boat. Not only is this more convenient, it will keep your tackle out from under your feet and in one place as you race off to your favorite fishing spot.
