Many people like to visualize themselves getting away from the daily grind and having a week to do nothing but fish. They see themselves standing by a beautiful stream, their fishing rod bent over with the weight of their prize-winning catch. If you want to make visions like this a reality though, you will need to make sure you are well-equipped for the task. And the first place to start is by selecting the right fishing rod.
Among all of your fishing gear, the rod is most important. They come in a huge array of different styles, lengths and composition. The fishing rod shaft is constructed from bamboo, wood, steel, fiberglass or graphite. Fishing line is threaded through eyes (or ferrules) along the rod. The business end of the line has a hook or lure attached, while the other end of the line is wrapped around a reel mounted to the handle of the rod.
Fishing rods are from around four feet to nearly 16 feet long. The average length is six feet. The fish you want to catch and where you will be fishing are the two things that determine appropriate fishing rod length. If you like fishing from the shore from the shade of overhead trees, you’ll need a shorter rod. Extra flexibility will also be an advantage. The diameter of the pole will determine how flexible the rod is. Thicker rods are stronger, but less flexible. Fishing out in the open lets you use a longer, thinner rod. Without the trees, you will be in less danger of hooking a branch when casting.
Keep in mind that different rods are used in freshwater and saltwater fishing. If you plan to concentrate on fishing lakes, ponds, streams and rivers, get a rod designed for freshwater fishing. Coastal and ocean fishing will need a different style rod meant for saltwater.
What kind of fish are you looking to catch? Large aggressive fish can actually break your pole if it’s not strong enough. But if you get a rod that’s too strong for the fish you are seeking, you’ll have trouble feeling it when they strike the bait.
When it comes to material, bamboo rods are usually designed for fly fishing, although very simple bamboo rods for freshwater fishing can be found. Fiberglass poles are perfect for beginners. Serious anglers often prefer graphite.
